Smoothie Maker Challenge

Our customer, a leader in food service equipment, needed a control for a blended ice drink maker with a graphical user interface. The control had to manage a refrigeration system, dispense accurate weights of varied ingredients, blend the drinks, and track internal supply inventory. Furthermore the control had to have a user friendly interactive user interface to assist and guide operators with both beverage preparation and food safety procedures.

The user interface had to support up to eight languages in an international fast-food environment and provide the means to update the recipes easily as new flavors are constantly introduced.

SMT Engineering's Solution

SMT Engineering successfully designed a two board set with a powerful 32-bit CPU, generous memory capacity plus touch screen control on one board. A second board provides resources for controlling refrigeration, valves and other mechanical functions.

SMT Engineering drew upon our GUI design experience to create a powerful database tool for defining the text and graphics as well as the touch screen navigatoin for over 100 interactive screens with over 900 phrases in 7 languages. Drink recipes entered in a spreadsheet can be transferred directly into the software.

The Outcome

SMT Engineering delivered a sophisticated, high quality, multi-board system product on time and on budget. SMT Engineering's concurrent design methodology and new product introduction process enabled our customer to launch their new product on schedule and on budget.

With thousands of the drink makers now in the field, the powerful and extensible graphics and text content management system enable SMT to implement additional features, add additional languages, and support the introduction of new drink flavors. These enhancements may be deployed simply by plugging a USB flash memory stick into the controller thanks to "Boot loader" capabilities SMT included in the software design.
