Test Development Strategies
An effective electronic product development test strategy is critical to the quality and efficiency of producing any electronic product. SMT Engineering can provide complete test specifications for your design, or work from your test plan to design and build a dedicated test fixture. We have developed a variety of functional test fixtures ranging from stand-alone to PC-based platforms, using both bed-of-nails and connector based solutions
Further, SMT Engineering can recommend the best mix of board-level and product level testing to provide optimum coverage at the lowest cost. SMT Engineering uses a mix of test methodologies:
- Stand-alone, microprocessor based custom automated functional test
- PC-based automated functional test with USB instrumentation
In addition to these test SMT Engineering can also offer its Proprietary SMART Test platform. SMART Platform, which stands for Scalable Modular Automated Re-usable Test. The SMART platform offers a test solution for low to mid volume PCB assemblies without high tooling costs.
As a contract manufacturer of complex electronic assemblies for markets that require high quality and reliability, Surface Mount Technology Corp. created this test alternative to provide customers a solution for test at a lower price point. Since Automated Test Equipment (ATE) fixtures are typically custom to each assembly they often do not hit a price point that fits for lower volume boards. The SMART platform provides the testing that our customers require at a price that fits their volume.
The SMART platform consists of a set of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) USB based instrumentation as well as standard software drivers. To develop a test for any assembly, a low cost fixture is developed from a standard fixture kit that interfaces to the SMART platform through a standard set of connectors. The fixture provides probing to the unit under test and connectivity to the instruments in the SMART Platform.
A test program is created using software libraries that provide a very efficient test development environment. The libraries have support for standard tests, user interface development, report generation, troubleshooting and fixture maintenance, and interfacing to data collection facilities for statistical process control
